The Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL, Câmara Brasileira do Livro in Portuguese) is a nonprofit association with the mission of expanding the Brazilian Publishing Market and encourage reading, creating a better country with better education through books. They are strong advocates that act close to the government and National Congress to maintain the relevance and in decision making towards books in Brazil.

Besides being one of the most important associations regarding reading and books in Brazil, the CBL is also responsible for Sao Paulo International Book Fair, and Jabuti Award which is the most important literary award in Brazil that had its first edition in 1959.

The association also provides exclusive services to its affiliates such as exclusive dealing letters, cataloging books, legal support for copyrighting and most recently, ISBN operation that consists of issuing identity numbers for books.

K2M Soluções (K2M) is a Microsoft Gold Partner established in 2001 by entrepreneurs with the focus on services and tools to Microsoft. K2M is also a two-time Microsoft Partner of the Year winner for Latin America and the Caribbean, one in 2011 in Content Management category, and the second one in Education category in 2018.

CBL’s digital transformation mainly focused in bringing all the services they already offered to its associates and non-associates to digital. Part of this process also included two new services provided fully digital as part of this process: ISBN registry, formerly provided by Brazilian National Library to a digital and easy access one; and a new and innovative service to provide Copyright registry using blockchain.

Solução:

Since 2018, CBL together with K2M have been working together towards its digital transformation. The initial challenge was to digitize the Jabuti Award.

K2M developed a new website for Jabuti Award where all the activities were held in exclusive areas for either judges or registers. All the process that once was very time consuming, where submissions, payments, physical book distribution to the judges, scoring were all made manually and took more than a month to be completed, now were all digital in an exclusive portal designed for the award. With a little more than 3,000 submissions per year, these multiplied among judges, the logistics to this took up a lot of time and resources, and now the participants could easily upload their books through the portal. In 2020, the CBL held the first full digital edition of the Jabuti Award, where the solutions created by K2M still remain being a big part of it.

Also in 2020 more changes started to take place among CBL. K2M developed solutions to ease the management and the communication with associates, creating the Services Portal and making processes like the ISBN operation and copywriting registry digital.

CBL started to operate the ISBN services in 2020, before that, the service was operated by National Library, the main goal of CBL was to turn it into an online resource. Together with this solution, K2M also had the task to transform the copywriting registry to digital. Both solutions had to include digital payment methods, together with invoice issues and operation management.

The solutions involved integrating CBL’s systems Metabooks for registry and generation of ISBN numbers and the Ethereum Blockchain technology as ledger to copywriting registry.

CBL and K2M now are working to include transforming the exclusive dealing letters, where CBL assures that a Book Editor has exclusive rights to publish a certain book this is used to sell to government without the need of a bid process, and book cataloging in digital processes, also integrating the Services Portal and the Jabuti Award enrollment and payment processes in a one solution.

K2M set up Dynamics 365 with new entities and entities that already existed to create a full integrated solution with Customer Service Portal so it would be possible to exchange safe information between Dynamics 365, and other external services.

K2M created the Services Portal using PowerApps Portals where associates and non-associates can easily access the services that CBL provides

In the CBL project, K2M applied Azure Blob Storage to store all the digital books for Jabuti Award and to store all digital files for the Service Portal. Azure Search provided the new and innovative solution CBL offered that allow the user to search for publications’ data using ISBN or other information.

Benefícios:

With the solutions created by K2M to CBL, it was possible to grow the access to information and services that were previously bureaucratic and time consuming. One of the services offered now by the Service Portal is ISBN, that was offered by National Library located in Rio de Janeiro, any publisher or author that required to issue the ISBN number had to travel to admit it in person. For a long time, this was something completely inaccessible for a lot of publishers around Brazil. Now, with ISBN held online by CBL, it is possible to increase the offering to the whole country and make it more accessible especially to small publishers and authors that are self-published.

The services such as copywriting registry and ISBN previously were acquired mostly by bigger publishers, author and editors working in Rio-Sao Paulo area. Working with online services helped the association to spread the information easily and give access to small authors, editors and publishers that could not acquire it before due to bureaucratic processes including having to travel to Rio de Janeiro and admit it in person.

The digital transformation helped increase both revenue and the number of associates from 600 to 800. In 2020 the revenue growth hit 120%, with this, new possibilities started to happen like investing more time and resources in the Brazilian Publishing Market during the pandemic.

With the revenue growth and the number of companies associated with CBL, it was possible to start improving the investments in small publishing market across Brazil, it was also possible to give free access to the first Digital Edition of International Book Fair that happened in December of 2020, with more than one million access in more than 90 countries, helping expand the Brazilian Publishing Market through the world. The association also could hold 120 lives during the year spreading the word for books and reading, and development of small
business.

With all the improvements and investments during 2020, the Brazilian Publishing Market grew 25% compared to 2019.

Despite these solutions were custom projects based on CBL’s needs, K2M created a solution exclusively to nonprofit organizations. Using Dynamics 365 as a platform that offers an easy  communication with constituents. The nonprofit organizations also have the possibility to create customized portals to attend their needs

The partnership between CBL and K2M started in 2018 and keeps on going through the present day. K2M is currently working on integrating the Jabuti Award website and Service Portal to offer an easy access to associates and non-associates to the full catalog of services CBL has to offer. We are also working towards developing solutions for other services CBL offers.
